ALIGARH: Police on Sunday arrested a Ghaziabad-based conman who had been using blue and red beacons on his vehicle, following a complaint of harassment by his estranged wife.

Hamid Khan, resident of Bhopura Mod, Sahibabad in Ghaziabad was arrested while travelling in a car with a blue beacon on top even though he is not authorised to. On searching the vehicle, police found two red and a second blue beacon. Khan confessed to police that the beacons helped him evade toll and bridge tax while travelling.

Police also found 15 SIM cards and eight cellphones, which he used to con people by pretending to know top officials of the state. Police have filed a case under section 507 (criminal intimidation by electronic means) and section 66 of IT Act. Police have also filed another case under section 419 (cheating by impersonation) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the IPC for the beacons.
In August 2015, Khan’s wife had filed a complaint against the husband and his mother for criminal intimidation, causing grievous hurt and other related sections of the IPC at Civil Lines here. In another complaint filed by her in July, the woman had alleged Khan had launched a smear campaign against her on social media in order to harass her.
“Following her complaint, we arrested Khan. He used to defraud people by pretending to know the names of the DGP and IG of UP as well as other senior officials. We will be investigating his activities,” said senior sub-inspector Ajit Singh, who arrested him from Ghaziabad.
