New Delhi, 22nd July 2023: National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF) will begin selling tomatoes for Rs 70 per kg on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) on July 24, after prices in some parts of the country reached Rs 150 per kg.

According to the network’s executives, the sale on ONDC will be confined to Delhi and will last for 10-15 days. The declaration follows the Centre’s earlier this week directive to NCCF and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) to sell tomatoes at Rs 70 per kg to offer consumers with relief.

According to ONDC, a 1-2 kg limit will be enforced on each purchase to prevent stockpiling. Customers can also get a discount on buyer applications like Paytm and Magicpin that have linked with the government-backed interoperable commerce network.

On July 18, the average retail price of a tomato in Delhi was Rs 130 per kg, and in Punjab it was Rs 127.70 per kg. To keep tomato prices under control and make them more cheap, the government has begun purchase through the Price Stabilisation Fund and is making it available to consumers at a heavily reduced cost.

NCCF and NAFED are constantly sourcing tomatoes from ‘Mandis’ in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra and making them accessible in major consuming centres such as Delhi-NCR, Bihar, Rajasthan, and others.

Tomatoes were first offered at Rs 90 per kg, however this was cut to Rs 80 per kg on July 16 and then decreased to Rs 70 per kg on July 20.
