Court rejects Rahul Gandhi’s request to quash defamation case

New Delhi, 07th July 2023: The Gujarat High Court today denied Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s bid for a stay of execution in a defamation action stemming from his 2019 Modi surname comment.

The court further stated that the Congress leader is requesting a stay of conviction on completely fictitious grounds, and that a stay of conviction is not a rule.

The court further stated that Rahul Gandhi is the subject of ten separate cases, This comes as a lawsuit was also made against Gandhi in Pune Court by Veer Savarkar’s grandson after Gandhi used remarks against Veer Savarkar at Cambridge.

The high court also stated that Gandhi had sought a stay of execution on “absolutely non-existent grounds,” and that a stay of execution is not a rule but an exception.

The magisterial court sentenced Gandhi in March for statements disparaging the ‘Modi’ surname made before of the 2019 national elections. He allegedly said at the time, “How come all thieves have Modi surname in common?”

Gandhi was condemned to two years in prison, which precluded him from running for office under the Representation of the People Act.
