Defence Procurement Board Approves Acquisition of 26 Rafale Fighters, 3 Scorpene Submarines for Indian Navy

New Delhi, July 11, 2023: In a significant development, the Defence Procurement Board has granted approval for the procurement of 26 Rafale fighters and three Scorpene submarines for the Indian Navy, as per sources familiar with the matter. The proposal for the acquisition of these advanced military assets has received initial approval, and the final decision is expected to be made during the upcoming meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council on July 13.

The acquisition of 26 Rafale fighters will enhance the Indian Navy’s combat capabilities and bolster the country’s air defense systems. These fighters are renowned for their advanced technology and are expected to strengthen India’s defense posture.
The proposal to acquire three Scorpene submarines has also received the go-ahead. These submarines will be constructed at Mazagon Docks Ltd., which has a successful track record of building submarines of the same class. The addition of these submarines will further bolster the Indian Navy’s underwater capabilities.

The announcement of these procurements could potentially be made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France on July 13-14. During his visit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to be the guest of honor at the Bastille Day Parade. As part of the parade, a contingent from the Indian military, including troops from the Indian Army’s Punjab Regiment, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force, will also participate, showcasing the country’s military prowess.

Mazagon Dock, a reputable shipyard, recently achieved another milestone by delivering the fifth Scorpene submarine, named “VAGIR,” as part of Project P-75 for the Indian Navy. The construction of these submarines highlights India’s commitment to strengthening its maritime capabilities and ensuring the security of its waters.

The final approval of these crucial defense deals is awaited, and they are expected to significantly enhance India’s naval strength, furthering its commitment to national security and defense modernization.
