Delhi Airport Customs Seize Over ₹10 Crore Foreign Currency in “Biggest Ever” haul

New Delhi, July 22, 2023: In a major operation, customs officials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport achieved their “biggest ever” seizure of foreign currency, amounting to more than ₹10 crore, from three Tajikistan nationals on Friday. The illicit currency was ingeniously concealed inside shoes stowed away in their luggage.

The customs authorities intercepted the accused individuals as they were about to board a flight bound for Istanbul. A meticulous examination of their baggage led to the stunning discovery of foreign currency in the form of USD 7,20,000 and Euro 4,66,200, equivalent to a staggering ₹10.6 Crore, as stated in the official customs department statement.

Prompt action was taken, and the foreign currency was swiftly seized. The customs department has initiated a thorough investigation into the matter to delve deeper into the roots of this audacious smuggling attempt.

According to customs officials, this seizure marks the largest-ever case of foreign currency smuggling through any airport in India, underscoring the significance of the operation and the gravity of the crime committed.
