New Delhi, August 21, 2023: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has taken decisive action, ordering the suspension of a government official from the Women and Child Development Department who is accused of a heinous crime – raping his friend’s 14-year-old daughter for several months and impregnating her. The gravity of the situation prompted the Delhi Police to swiftly reach the official’s residence to effect his arrest.
The victim, a Class 12 student in Delhi, had been living with the accused and his family following her father’s demise on October 1, 2020. The accused, a deputy director in the WCD department, held a trusted position as the victim’s local guardian, often referred to as her ‘mama’ (maternal uncle).
Allegations suggest that the accused perpetrated the vile acts over multiple instances between November 2020 and January 2021, leaving the survivor traumatized.
In response to the horrifying incident, Delhi Police have lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against both the accused and his wife under charges of rape as per the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The wife is also implicated in administering medication to terminate the pregnancy.
According to DCP North, Sagar Singh, “The survivor started having anxiety bouts and was admitted to a hospital a week back,” after which she revealed the abuse during extensive psychological counseling. Further investigations are ongoing, while the victim is still in recovery and receiving care.
Swati Maliwal, Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, expressed her dismay over the case, revealing that the accused official has not yet been arrested. She lamented, “Someone who was supposed to ensure the safety of daughters has turned into a predator. Where should girls go? Arrest should happen soon!”
The incident casts a grim light on the need for swift and comprehensive action in cases of such nature to ensure justice and safety for victims.
As investigations continue, the accused’s identity has been withheld to protect the survivor’s privacy and wellbeing. The survivor’s statement will be recorded before a magistrate to gather more information for the case.
