Delhi Govt to rename all colonies named ‘harijan’ after Dr B R Ambedkar

New Delhi, 2 June 2022: Following the central government’s guidelines against use of ‘harijan’ word, the Delhi government has decided to rename roads and colonies adding ‘harijan’ in the names after Dr B R Ambedkar.

The central government had advised not using the word, ‘harijan’ deeming it to be derogatory and negative by the SC communities.

The social welfare minister in Delhi govt, Rajendra Pal Gautam had conducted a meeting of senior ministers and officials on the same. He stated that the Kejriwal-led government intends to uplift the condition of SCs, STs and OBCs in New Delhi. “We have taken immediate cognisance of the need for renaming of all ‘harijan’ colonies, bastis, mohallas and streets, be named after Dr B R Ambedkar, ” He added.
