Delhi Metro’s first section of Phase 3 From Central Secretariat to Mandi House Opened For Public
A 3.23 kilometre long Metro section from Central Secretariat to Mandi House (totally underground) was opened for the public from today. This section is a part of Central Secretariat – Kashmere Gate line (9.37 kms) of Phase 3 which is an extension of the presently operational Central Secretariat- Badarpur corridor (22 kms) of Phase 2.
This section which is the first section of Phase 3 to be opened, has been completed in a short time span of only 21/2 years and has been completed within cost. The section was originally scheduled to be opened in October, 2014.
The first train on this section was flagged off today from the Mandi House Metro station by the Union Minister of Urban Development, Sh. M. Venkaiah Naidu in the presence of other senior officials.
The Mandi House station will be the first interchange station of Delhi Metro’s Phase 3. The existing Mandi House station of Phase 2 has been expanded to cater to additional passengers. Approximately 70,000 new passengers are expected to use the station by the year 2016.
The opening of this section has been advanced as this stretch will help a lot in decongesting the busy Rajiv Chowk Metro Station as the commuters of the Badarpur- Central Secretariat Line bound for NOIDA, Vaishali as well as Dwarka will be able to change trains at the Mandi House station without changing trains twice at Central Secretariat and Rajiv Chowk.
The trains on this section will run with a frequency of 3.25 minutes. The new stations – Janpath and Mandi House are equipped with Token Vending Machines and Add Value cum card readers besides other passenger related facilities.
Attractive artworks have been installed at both the stations to depict the areas around the stations like monuments, cultural hubs and historical as well as tourist places. The areas around the stations have been aesthetically landscaped with plants.
As part of Phase 3, Delhi Metro is constructing a total of 140 kilometres of Metro lines. The new corridors will provide Metro connectivity to the arterial Ring Road as well as Outer Ring Road of the city apart from Old Delhi and outer Delhi areas such as Badli and Majlis Park and the satellite cities of Faridabad and Bahadurgarh.
