Delhi Police arrest two for mobile phone theft, recover stolen bike

New Delhi, July 26 (IANS) In continuation of Delhi Police’s crackdown against street crime, the staff of Police Station Mandawali, East District, apprehended two accused for stealing mobile phones and recovered three gadgets and one stolen motorcycle, used in the commission of the offence, officials said on Sunday.

One of the accused has been identified as 26-year-old Manish, who was allegedly involved in snatching mobile phones, while the other, 30-year-old Muzhar, used to buy the stolen items. Both of them are residents of the national capital. Police said the recoveries have resulted in the working out of three criminal cases, including the present case.

According to police, an online e-FIR No. 80059391/26 dated July 21 under Section 303(2) BNS was received at Mandawali police station regarding the snatching of a mobile phone.

During investigation, it was revealed that the complainant, Durgesh Singh, was on his way to work and took out his mobile phone to make a call near Deshbandhu Apartments, when an unknown person riding a motorcycle approached from behind, snatched the mobile phone from his hand, and fled from the spot.

Subsequently, Section 303(2) BNS was deleted, and Section 304(2) BNS was invoked in the case, as per the facts established during investigation.

According to an official statement, a dedicated police team comprising Head Constable Anil and HC Imran was constituted under the close supervision of Inspector Anil Malik, SHO Mandawali police station, and the overall guidance of ACP/Sub Division Mayur Vihar Yogesh Malhotra, to work out the case.

The team conducted technical surveillance, analysed technical evidence, developed local intelligence, and carried out sustained field surveillance to identify the offender. During the course of investigation, acting on a specific tip-off received from a reliable informer, the police team apprehended accused Manish near Delhi’s Patparganj area while he was riding a motorcycle bearing registration No. DL-7SAL-**.

Upon verification, the motorcycle was found to be stolen with an e-FIR No. 015940/26 under Section 305(B) BNS lodged at Pandav Nagar police station. Further investigation also established that the same motorcycle had been used in the commission of the present snatching case.

During sustained interrogation, accused Manish confessed to having snatched the mobile phone of the complainant. He disclosed that, with the intention of earning easy money, he had used the stolen motorcycle to commit the offence and subsequently sold the snatched mobile phone to Muzhar, a resident of the national capital’s Kotla Village, who was engaged in purchasing stolen or snatched mobile phones.

Acting promptly on the disclosure, the police team apprehended Muzhar. His search resulted in the recovery of the three stolen mobiles, including the one pertaining to the present case. The other two recovered mobile phones were found connected with e-FIR No. 80023065/26 under Section 305 BNS, lodged at Mandawali police station.

Further investigation is in progress to ascertain the involvement of both accused persons in other similar offences and to identify additional receivers involved in the disposal of stolen property.

Officials said that accused Manish has been found to have been previously involved in six criminal cases.
