New Delhi, 29 September 2022: In a mock drill, the Northeast district’s Delhi Police presented an emergency response plan and held several drills to test its readiness to handle rioting or any other unfortunate situation in the national capital.

With more than 250 police officials, a training exercise was conducted where the public was asked to “act” as rioters or those caught up in riots. The cops then demonstrated their training abilities to manage the “riot.”

Senior officials stated that despite having proper training, most of the time the police may not know how to respond to emergencies. According to the officers, the drill taught them which formations would be effective as well as what equipment or weapons to use and at what angle.

Sanjay Sain, deputy commissioner of police for Northeast Delhi stated that the staff trained in a variety of formations, including the Vajra, umbrella, wall, and multi-barrel launcher. They employed tear smoke shells and water cannons. More than 252 shells were fired as a result of the riot-like situation we induced.

A police officer noted that the Yellow scheme, which is a component of the emergency response plan, was also requested to be executed by the police staff. “We also had the Orange scheme to be used if a similar incident occurs in more than one location. In that situation, more staff is brought in. Since there have been numerous reports of violence, employees from various districts are contacted in the Red scheme case,” according to an officer.

The police officials also carried out patrols in Jyoti Nagar, Jafrabad, and Seelampur, sensitive neighborhoods, and pockets where riots broke out in 2020. According to the police, this was a part of their “area takeover exercise” to raise public awareness.
