MAIDS organizes Dental Health Utsav from 14th to 18th December’2016, NEW DELHI

Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences is a premiere institute providing advanced dental services run by the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi. The Institute has today emerged as a centre of national and global excellence in the field of dental education, patient care and research and it is still striving to excel and extend the dental care services to serve the patients better. MAIDS cater to more than 3 Lakh patients annually and have furthered its outreach services with the Six Mobile Dental Clinics that serve difficult and underserved areas of Delhi.

Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) is organizing a Dental Health Utsav ‘Delhi Smiles – 2016’ from 14th to 18th December’2016 in its campus, with an aim to create a much-needed awareness for dental healthcare. The Utsav deliberates on various issues related to oral health. The four day long Utsav will comprise of Free Dental Check up, dental health awareness through novel exhibits and lectures. The theme of this year’s event is “Wholesome Nutrition Healthy Teeth” mainly displayed with innovative exhibits and demonstrations is open for public display.

Dental Health Utsav “Delhi Smiles” is a flagship program that the Institute has been organizing for the last 25 years. This mega community initiative is aimed at creating dental health awareness and attracts more than 10,000 visitors every year. This year, the theme is “Wholesome Nutrition Healthy Teeth”. This year’s Dental Health Utsav “Delhi Smiles” was inaugurated by Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri.Manish Sisodia and presided by Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family welfare, Shri Satyender Jain, and other eminent personalities are Chief Secretary, GNCT of Delhi Shri. M.M. Kutty, Secretary, GNCT of Delhi, Shri.Chandraker Bharati, President, Dental Council of India, Dr.Dibyendu Mazumder and Dean, Maulana Azad Medical College, Dr.Deepak Tempe and other dignitaries at 11.00 am on 14th December 2016 in the MAIDS premises.

Addressing the august gathering Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Verma, Director-Principal of the Institute said that Oral health affects people physically and psychologically, influencing how they look, speaks, chew, taste food and their social well-being. He also emphasized the role of nutrition in healthy as well as in Oral health. He said that poor nutrition can lead to all kinds of health issues, including oral health problems such as gum disease and cavities.

Further several studies have linked poor oral health with cardiovascular disease, poor glycaemic control in diabetics, low birth-weight pre-term babies, and a number of other conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. Oral infections are also recognized as a problem for individuals suffering from a range of chronic conditions. He encouraged the people of Delhi to make use of this event and join us in the public health oriented event.

He also apprised all regarding the Phase II MAIDS building of the Institute which is under construction and progressing smoothly. Soon this new facility would augment the delivery of services and bring newer specialties like Forensic Dentistry, Comprehensive Dentistry, Advanced Research Laboratories and Advanced Radiological services within the common man’s reach.

Addressing the gathering, Dr.Debyendu Mazumdar, President Dental Council of India said that Oral health is an integral component of overall health and well-being. “Dental diseases are preventable in nature and lack of awareness and neglect have led it to become a catastrophic affecting the population in many ways,” he said. He appreciated the efforts of the Institute in bringing oral health care to the needy and poor. He said this is the only Dental College in India which has such an organized and structured outreach component. He emphasized the need to reorient the dental services in India and improve overall oral health status of the masses through awareness campaigns and dental services. He said that he would work towards bringing back the smiles on the faces of people of Delhi and India.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri. Satyendar Jain, Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare said that Delhi has made tremendous improvements in health care delivery, and that much of the credit should be given to its network of public hospitals. He also said the Government is making all efforts to ensure access of adequate dental services to all citizens in Delhi. He said MAIDS will be the leader in Dental Care services and would make efforts to create FIVE similar Institutes in Delhi for catering to the needs of the people. He also said there is an urgent need to create centres for routine dental care and MAIDS and MAIDS like centres only of referral services. And for routine dental care at primary and secondary levels should be addressed by “Aam Admi Dental Clinics” in lines with Aam Admi Polyclinics. He also released health education film on “Oral Hygiene Instructions in Sign Language” which was conceptualized and created by Department of Public Health Dentistry of MAIDS. The actor here is Postgraduate student of the Institute, Dr.Sumbul Hashmi, who is a certified sign language expert. This special film was developed on the background work of the department with this special group of children. Currently the department is working with the Department of Social Welfare, GNCT of Delhi to render dental check up and health education to these needy children.

Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri. Manish Sisodia, in his speech, commended the MAIDS for ensuring quality in dental care services. He said that the Institute is an asset not only for Delhi but also for the nation. Oral diseases are prevalent and none in any social strata are spared from the impact of these diseases. He emphasised the need for preventive strategies to be developed to reduce the burden of dental diseases among the masses. Hence it is necessary to initiate awareness drives and render appropriate and timely dental care. The efforts should be to target mainly school children so that they develop positive dental health attitude. He emphasized that there is an urgent need to bring oral health to the schools and train children to maintain oral hygiene. On this occasion Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi released the “Annual Year Book” of MAIDS which is compilation of achievements by the Institution in the last year.

The Dental Health Utsav 2016 has a gamut of events for all age groups. The Guest Lectures scheduled on 14th, 15 th and 16th December has some eminent personalities like Dr.Mohit Gupta, Motivational Speaker, Ms. Aruna Bruta, Psychologist and Shri.Ashok Chakradhar, Poet and Writer. The Cultural events include Odishi Dance by Padamshree Ranjana Gauhar and Rajasthani Folk Songs by Ustaad Rehmat Khan Lange. The “Paint-a-Smile” competition has been organized for children from schools, NGOs and other organizations. A special street play has organized on 16th December by “Salaam Baalak Trust”, NGO working for the welfare of Street Children. An array of Inter-college competitions is being organized during the Health Utsav, where many dental institutions across Delhi and NCR participate to bring out the many facets of the students. The standout events during the Dental Health Utsav are “Socio-drama-Street Play”, “Singing”, and

“Photography Competitions”.

The Institute has contributed in not only serving the people of Delhi with the most advanced as well as quality dental care services for more than 33 years, it has continued its leadership role in consistently providing accessible, affordable and comprehensive oral health care services to all with focus on underprivileged.

The Dental Health Utsav symbolizes an event with a culmination of various aspects of public health significance. It is a platform that brings together Community awareness through mass education along with comprehensive dental check up and an array of cultural events.
