New Delhi, 6 May 2022: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation failed to conduct the anti-encroachment drive at Shaheen Bagh on 5th May as the police refused to deploy security personnel for the demolition stating that the location is known for critical law-and-order.

The Delhi police has asked the SDMC to postpone the demolition drives scheduled between 5th May to 8th May.

In the letter, it was reasoned, “The area of south-east district is extremely sensitive from a law-and-order point of view. Moreover, local political leaders may also carry out protests against the special demolition/sealing/encroachment removal programme to gain political mileage. Due to present law and order situation, police cannot be provided for above programme due to non-availability of sufficient police force.”

Security will be deployed depending on the availability, senior officials said. The drive had started successfully from Tughlakabad with police assistance.

The preparation have been made for the demolitions, the authorities are awaiting police’s active participation. “Bulldozers are available with the department and the drive can be continued on the same schedule once the police agree,” they said.
