Election Commission Rolls Out 18 New Initiatives Ahead of Upcoming Elections
TEN NEWS NETWORK
New Delhi, May 23, 2025: In a major push towards strengthening the electoral process and enhancing transparency, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has unveiled 18 new initiatives aimed at improving voter experience, engaging political parties, streamlining procedures, and modernising administrative practices.
Focus on Electors
To address overcrowding and make voting more accessible, the ECI has limited the number of voters per polling station to 1,200. Additionally, new polling booths will be established in high-rise buildings and densely populated colonies to facilitate smoother voting.
In a significant step towards more accurate electoral rolls, the ECI will now directly obtain death registration data from the Registrar General of India (RGI) database. After due verification, names of deceased individuals will be removed promptly.
Voter Information Slips are also being redesigned to display the voter’s serial and part number more prominently, making it easier for electors to locate their polling information.
Political Party Engagement Strengthened
The Commission has ramped up its engagement with political parties through 4,719 all-party meetings conducted at multiple levels — 40 at CEO, 800 at DEO, and 3,879 at ERO — with participation from over 28,000 representatives.
High-level meetings were also held with leaders of major national and state political parties including AAP, BJP, BSP, CPI(M), and NPP. Moreover, capacity building programs for Booth Level Agents of political parties have been initiated at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.
Procedural and Legal Reforms
A key highlight is the launch of ECINET, an integrated dashboard that consolidates over 40 existing applications and websites into a single platform, offering one-stop access to services for all stakeholders.
To resolve long-standing issues related to duplicate Elector Photo Identity Cards (EPIC), a new mechanism has been introduced to ensure the issuance of unique EPIC numbers.
On the legal front, the ECI has mapped 28 different stakeholders involved in elections, from voters and officials to political candidates and parties, based on the Representation of the People Acts (1950 & 1951), related rules, and Commission guidelines. Stakeholder-specific training materials are now being developed accordingly.
Empowering Election Staff
The Commission has initiated multiple training programmes at IIIDEM, New Delhi. Over 3,000 Booth Level Supervisors have already been trained, and plans are underway to train more than one lakh BLO Supervisors in the coming years.
BLOs will also be issued standardised photo identity cards for easier identification. Orientation programs for State and Mobile Nodal Officers from all 36 States and UTs have been completed. Furthermore, police officers from Bihar have received specialised election-related training.
Institutional Upgrades at ECI
Internally, the ECI has implemented biometric attendance systems and rolled out an E-Office for digital efficiency. Regular review meetings with Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) are also being institutionalised for better coordination and performance monitoring.
