#Engineering student killed as car hits tree on NH-24

Ghaziabad: A 23-year-old engineering student, identified by police as Prateek Goyal, was killed in a car accident on NH-24 in Ghaziabad early on Monday. Two friends who were accompanying him — Vinit Jain and Rohan — escaped unhurt.

The accident occurred around 3am near Lal Kuan, when Vinit Jain was driving the car towards Hapur. “Early investigations suggest the car spun out of control, crashed against a tree, ricocheted off and hit a wall. Prateek, who was in the rear seat, appears to have received the full brunt of the impact. We are trying to work out the exact sequence of events,” said Kavi Nagar SHO Ashok Sisodiya.

Vinit and Rohan told cops they were on their way back after having dinner, when the accident happened. Police sources said they are investigating if the men were inebriated at the time of the accident.

The car, a Maruti Suzuki SX4, belonged to Dr S K Jain, a physician based in Nehru Nagar of Ghaziabad. Jain told TOI Vinit is the son of his younger brother, and lives in their ancestral house in Lohia Nagar. “Vinit lives with his parents in our ancestral house. I generally park the car in our Lohia Nagar house. Vinit uses the vehicle occasionally to drive my father to the temple or other places around town. The two other men who were in there with him, including the one who died in the accident, are not local youth,” Jain told TOI.
Police said all three of them are engineering students at Ideal Institute of Technology. There were no external injuries on Prateek’s body except for concussion marks on his head and chest, according to cops.
No case has been registered in the matter. However, Ghaziabad Police have registered an entry of Prateek’s death in the general diary of Kavi Nagar police station, based on a memo by the hospital.
