New Delhi (India), May 8, 2023: Violent clashes between two ethnic groups in the Indian state of Manipur have left over 50 people dead and more than 260 injured, according to officials. The fighting between members of the Kuki and Meitei communities has also displaced over 23,000 civilians, who have sought refuge in military bases and garrisons.
Hospitals in Imphal have reported gunshot wounds and head injuries as the most common injuries. Indian army troops have been deployed to the streets, and a mobile internet blackout is in force for five days.
A youth tribal leader, who requested anonymity due to safety fears, described the violence as a “systematic, well-planned series of attacks.” He said that many houses and churches have been burned down and that he had witnessed the deaths of a mother and son who were beaten to death by a mob.
The skirmishes broke out after thousands of tribal people took part in a rally against the potential inclusion of the Meitei ethnic group in India’s “Scheduled Tribe” grouping. Meitei campaigners have long sought such recognition, which would entitle them to greater benefits and opportunities.
The Indian army has been working tirelessly to restore normalcy and has enhanced its surveillance efforts using drones and helicopters. The state government of Manipur and the Indian army have not commented on the situation, and the governor has issued “shoot-at-sight” orders for extreme cases.
The situation remains volatile, and civilians continue to seek refuge in army camps. The clashes highlight the deeply entrenched divisions and inequalities that persist within India’s complex socio-political landscape.
