FARE OF DELHI METRO SHOULD BE REDUCED TO 50% AND DTC MADE FREE DURING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ODD-EVEN SCHEME

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha, Sh. Vijender Gupta today demanded that during the period of Odd-Even Scheme, the metro fare should be reduced to half and DTC travel should be made free.  This was successfully implemented in a number of countries where Odd-Even scheme was implemented.  He said that people make use of mass transportation facility leading to decline in traffic on roads.  He said that these schemes are being introduced again by Kejriwal Government without making adequate preparations and making alternative arrangements.  These relaxations are essential for providing relief to the public and encouraging mass transport.

The parents are perplexed as only school children in dress are exempted from the scheme.  The Government has not taken care of the parents while coming back after dropping their children in uniform or going to school to pick up them from the school.  The parents are scared of the behavior of the traffic police and other law implementing agencies.  Mr. Gupta urged the Government to find a solution to this problem of parents.

Experts from IIT Delhi found that the scheme provided relief neither from pollution nor from traffic jams.  It rather lead to traffic jams from 6-8 in the morning.  It was found by the experts that the number of buses, auto rickshaws and two-wheelers recorded a high turnout leading to growth in pollution. Besides IIT Delhi, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Air Pollution Control Committee, School of Planning and Architecture, Institute of Transport Research and Accident Prevention Programme found the scheme to be failure.

Leader of Opposition said that such programmes in other countries have been implemented only when alternative systems of transportation have been placed in order.  He asked the Government to study success models of other countries to make the scheme really successful.
