Faridabad:Ms Lalitha Kumarmangalam, Chairperson of NCW (National Commission for women) delivered a meaningful talk at the Manav Rachna Educational Institutions campus. The talk was conducted as a part of the Leadership Series of Manav Rachna International University’s ‘Swayamsiddha: Celebrating being a Woman’ month long programme in collaboration with Sindhu Srijan, an NGO working on Women and Youth Empowerment. Gracing the occasion as Chief Guest, Ms Lalitha Kumarmangalam, who is also a member of the National Executive Body of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), sensitized the audience on laws governing women’s rights and how there is a need to make use of them when the need arises. The event was also attended by senior dignitaries Smt Satya Bhalla, Chief Patron, MREI, Dr N.C. Wadhwa, Vice Chancellor, MRIU; Dr M.M. Kathuria, Trustee, MREI; Dr Chavi Bhargava Sharma, Dean, FMS, MRIU; Ms Gauri Shankar of Sindhu Srijan, among others.

Welcoming Ms Lalitha Kumarmangalam, Smt Satya Bhalla, Chief Patron, MREI said, “Women in today’s world are in no way inferior to men as they continue to fulfill multiple roles in society.” She urged women to be strong to seek support from society at large. Her evocative lines, “Nari mein hai shakti sari, phir kyon woh hai bechari’ where women are perceived as victims drew deep appreciation from the audience.

Ms. Lalitha Kumarmangalam felt that women need to be aware of two tough laws that govern their rights: the first concerns sexual harassment in the workplace which applies for both men and women and the second law centers around domestic violence. In most cases, women have no idea about the laws that are in place. For instance, a woman does not know that her paternal home remains her home as long as she is alive and the fact that she has equal right to property as any of her siblings.”

She also said that economies where women are in the decision making positions tend to do much better.

The programme was part of the continued efforts of Faculty of Management Studies, Manav Rachna International University in creating awareness on gender sensitization among the youth, in association with Sindhu Srijan under ‘Swayam Siddha: Celebrating Being A Woman’ series which has been witness to various activities and events centered on themes relating to women from 12th February 2016 onwards. The month long programme will culminate on 8th March, celebrated the world over as International Women’s Day.
