New Delhi, Dec 19, 2022: The Indian states of Kerala and West Bengal boast a huge number of fans and supporters of Argentina’s national football team who erupted with joy after their team defeated France and lodged a victory at the FIFA World Cup 2022, held in Qatar.
Fans in Kolkata burst crackers and made rounds of their localities in Argentina’s blue and white colours with the country’s national flag fluttering from their hands.
Several areas of both Kerala and of West Bengal were awash in blue and white flags as the South American nation won the nail-biting final in a tie-breaker.
Kolkata had, in 2008, hosted Diego Armando Maradona, and boasts a huge fan following of Argentina and their icon Lionel Messi.
“We said we (Argentina) will win. Argentina created history. Messi ki jai,” overjoyed fans were shown shouting in various TV channels. Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, had taken to Facebook to congratulate Argentina on their World Cup victory. “Congratulations to Argentina who won the football World Cup. Lionel Messi led Argentina to victory — the most precious achievement of his career,” Vijayan stated.
