Footbridge Collapses During Baisakhi Celebrations in Jammu and Kashmir, 40 injured

New Delhi (India), April 14, 2023: In a tragic incident, a footbridge collapsed during Baisakhi celebrations in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district, injuring at least 40 people, including several children.

The incident occurred at Beni Sangam in the Bain village of Chenani block, causing panic and chaos among a large number of people present on the bridge at the time of the accident.

According to Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, the bridge collapsed due to overloading as a significant number of people were on it when it gave way.

Police and relief teams rushed to the spot and began rescue operations, with the injured admitted to Chennai Hospital and four of the severely injured transported to District Hospital Udhampur.

As videos and pictures of the incident circulated on social media, the extent of the damage in the far-flung Chenani block became apparent, highlighting the urgent need for improved infrastructure and safety measures in remote regions of the country.
