Mumbai, 10th June 2023: Congress today appointed 4-time MLA Varsha Gaikwad as the Mumbai Congress chief, marking a major move before the city elections this year.

Experts predict that she now faces a tough challenge of rejuvenating the cadre ahead of elections to the civic body as well as Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly.
Elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), long due, are expected to be held before the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

She replaces Bhai Jagtap as the city Congress chief, and became the first woman to hold this post.

This comes as the Congress could earlier not win a single seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Mumbai. The country’s financial capital has six Lok Sabha and 36 Assembly seats. She represents the Dharavi constituency in the Assembly.

She served as a minister in the Democratic Front government of the Congress and the NCP, and then in the Maha Vikas Aghadi administration of the Congress, the NCP, and the Shiv Sena government as well.
