National News (18/10/2026): The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated prosecution proceedings against three companies over alleged food safety violations involving biscuit manufacturing practices, milk quality and pesticide residues in packaged food products. The cases concern Surya Food & Agro Ltd., the manufacturer of Priyagold biscuits, Dodla Dairy and UEIR Organic Foods.

The regulatory action highlights concerns over compliance with prescribed food safety standards and manufacturing practices. The allegations relate to separate incidents involving the handling of raw materials at a biscuit manufacturing facility, the quality of a milk sample and pesticide residues detected in packaged raisins.

Priyagold Biscuit Manufacturer Faces Action Over Manufacturing Practices

FSSAI has initiated prosecution proceedings against Surya Food & Agro Ltd., which manufactures Priyagold biscuits, following an inspection that reportedly identified concerns at its manufacturing facility.

According to reports, the inspection allegedly found the use of bran intended for cattle feed as a source of fibre in biscuit production. Officials also reportedly observed deficiencies in hygiene, pest control and raw-material storage.

The company’s food safety licence had previously been suspended following the inspection and subsequent regulatory action. The latest prosecution proceedings relate to the alleged violations identified during the process.

The case raises questions about compliance with food manufacturing requirements, particularly regarding the suitability of ingredients, sanitation practices and the proper storage of raw materials used in products intended for human consumption.

Dodla Dairy Faces Prosecution Over Milk Sample

In a separate case, FSSAI has initiated prosecution proceedings against Dodla Dairy over concerns arising from a sample of its full cream milk.

The sample was initially reported to contain milk fat below the prescribed standard. Subsequent laboratory testing reportedly detected detergent or caustic soda in the sample, prompting further food safety concerns.

The reported findings relate to both the composition and safety of the tested milk sample. However, the allegations concern the specific sample under examination and should not, in themselves, be interpreted as establishing a finding about every product manufactured or sold by the company.

The case will be subject to the applicable regulatory and legal process.

UEIR Organic Foods Under Scrutiny Over Pesticide Residues

FSSAI has also initiated prosecution proceedings against UEIR Organic Foods after pesticide residues were reportedly detected in a sample of yellow raisins.

The case concerns compliance with food safety requirements governing pesticide residues in packaged food products. Such standards are intended to ensure that food available to consumers meets prescribed safety limits and regulatory requirements.

The reported detection has led to legal proceedings against the company. The final outcome will depend on the evidence presented and the findings of the competent authorities.

What the FSSAI Action Means for Food Safety Compliance

FSSAI is responsible for regulating food safety and enforcing standards under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Its regulatory framework covers food manufacturing, ingredient quality, hygiene, product standards and permissible levels of contaminants.

Prosecution proceedings allow authorities to pursue legal action over alleged violations of applicable food safety requirements. Depending on the findings and the relevant legal provisions, such cases may lead to further penalties or other consequences.

However, the initiation of prosecution does not amount to a court conviction. The allegations against the three companies must be considered through the appropriate legal process, and the final outcome will depend on the evidence and adjudication.

The cases underscore the importance of consistent quality control, safe manufacturing practices and compliance with food safety regulations across the food industry. They also highlight the role of regulatory inspections and laboratory testing in identifying potential risks and enforcing standards intended to protect consumers.
