Gurgaon: A special investigation team formed by Mumbai police arrived in Gurgaon on May 18 and stayed till May 22 to collect blood samples of the Gurgaon policemen involved in the encounter of gangster Sandeep Gadoli but the city cops did not meet them.

Gadoli’s family has alleged that the February 7 encounter at Airport Metro hotel in Andheri was staged.

ACP Avdhut Chavan, head of the Mumbai SIT, told TOI they would move court for a warrant against the Gurgaon cops only after the decision of the Supreme Court, which is expected on Friday, May 27. On that day, an appeal filed by the Haryana police seeking directions from the court to the Mumbai police to not register an FIR against the Gurgaon cops will be heard.

Sources said during the four-day visit in Gurgaon the three-members SIT headed by inspector Ran Shevare visited various places in the city looking for leads to investigate whether the encounter was staged as alleged by the gangster’s family.

Chavan said, “We are yet to get the forensic report of the CCTV footage and complete investigation of cops and people having any link with the encounter. We will finish the investigation and will be able to make a statement only after that. Our team visited Gurgaon but could not even meet the DCP concerned and returned after a wait for four days.”

Sources told TOI the SIT had pointed out many discrepancies in the FIR filed by Gurgaon police. A senior cop told TOI, “The SIT has found that a lot of information in the FIR is incorrect. Hence, the SIT can file a case against Gurgaon police for murder, causing destruction of evidence, giving false information to screen offender, misuse of lawful powers by a public servant to cause injury of another person, and being party to a criminal conspiracy to commit an offence punishable with death in addition to the sections of the Arms Act.”
The charges will be clearer after the FIR is presented in court. One reason for the SIT to rush with the investigation is that its chief investigating officer is due to retire on May 31.
Gurgaon police commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk was not available for comments to TOI while another senior police officer declined to speak, saying the matter was subjudice.
