New Delhi, 07th July 2023: The Supreme Court decided on Friday to hear a petition challenging the Varanasi district magistrate’s decision to demolish a building belonging to the Sarva Sewa Sangh, an organisation that promotes Gandhian values.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha took note of lawyer Prashant Bhushan’s submissions and observed that he can inform the district magistrate about the top court agreeing to hear the plea on Monday and that no demolition of the structure will take place in the meantime.

Previously, the NGO filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court challenging a demolition notice issued by the Northern Railways to remove structures on a 12.90-acre land in Varanasi district.

The institution stated that the land for its Varanasi headquarters, ‘Pargana Dehat,’ was obtained from the central government through “three registered sale deeds in 1960, 1961, and 1970.”

The district magistrate, who was given authority by the high court to rule on the dispute between the organisation and the Northern Railways, issued a demolition notice.
