Garbage in Landfills Came Down by 26.1 Lakh Tonnes in 4 Months: LG Saxena

New Delhi, 13 October 2022: The volume of garbage at the landfill sites in Delhi has decreased by 26.1 lakh tonnes during the last four months, as per officials from Delhi LG Saxena’s office.

The three major landfills in Ghazipur, Bhalswa, and Okhla have reportedly decreased from 229.1 lakh tonnes in May to 203 lakh tonnes in September, ie, around 26.1 lakh tonnes in four months has been cut down.

Additionally, LG VK Saxena has directed the MCD to develop a plan of action to “raze” the waste piles within 18 months. To treat waste, 50 more trommel machines will be put into service.

A memorandum of understanding has been struck with a cement business for the lifting of 50,000 tonnes of fuel annually at a cost of Rs 100 per tonne to be paid to the MCD for the usage of fuel obtained from the trash.
