GE signs Memorandum with HAL to Manufacture Jet Engines for IAF

New Delhi, 22nd June 2023: General Electric’s aerospace unit announced on Thursday that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to jointly produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Mk-II ,Tejas.

The news comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi makes an official state visit to the United States at President Joe Biden’s request.

The US Firm said in a statement said, “The agreement includes the potential joint production of GE Aerospace’s F414 engines in India, and GE Aerospace continues to work with the US government to receive the necessary export authorisation for this.”

It referred to the Memorandum of Understanding with HAL as a “key element” in enhancing India-US defence cooperation.

H Lawrence Culp, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GE and CEO of GE Aerospace said, “This is a historic agreement made possible by our longstanding partnership with India and HAL.”

He further said, “We are proud to play a role in advancing President Biden and Prime Minister Modi’s vision of closer coordination between the two nations. Our F414 engines are unmatched and will offer important economic and national security benefits for both countries as we help our customers produce the highest quality engines to meet the needs of their military fleet.”

For more than four decades, GE Aerospace has been active in the Indian aerospace industry, providing engines, avionics, services, engineering, manufacturing, and local sourcing. Aside from potential new work in India, a number of US sites presently supporting work on the F414 engine will experience increased activity as a result of the decision taken today.

GE’s presence in India includes its research and technology centre, the John F Welch Technology Centre, which opened in Bengaluru in 2000, and its Multi-modal Factory, which opened in Pune in 2015.
