GHAZIABAD: A district-level committee in Ghaziabad shut down 30 industrial units in Loni on Thursday after they were found operating from residential areas. Majority of the industries were pit furnace units or units extracting lead from spent dry cells. The UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) in Ghaziabad said the units were shut down after notices issued to them yielded no response. The committee, which comprises of representatives of the pollution control board, the district administration and the department of industries, had marked the units for breaching pollution related-norms in a survey conducted earlier this month. “The units were highly polluting in nature. They did not have any consent to operate from the pollution control board.
