Delhi, August 26th, 2022: In a big blow to Congress, the former leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and a senior Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad quit the party and resigned from all party posts on Friday morning.

Azad wrote a five-page resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi wherein he said he does so with a “heavy heart”.
The situation in the Congress party has reached a point of ‘no return’, Ghulam Nabi Azad wrote in his detailed resignation letter, days after he resigned from the organizational post of Jammu and Kashmir citing health issues.

“The entire organizational election process is a farce and a sham. At no place anywhere in the country have elections been held at any level of the organization. Handpicked lieutenants of the AICC have been coerced to sign on lists prepared by the coterie that runs the AICC sitting in 24 Akbar Road,” Azad wrote.

Attacking Rahul Gandhi, Azad wrote that the situation worsened after the 2019 elections when Gandhi stepped down and insulted all party members who have given their life to the party.
He further blamed his “immaturity” for Congress’s dwindling political clout and poor performance in elections.

“Unfortunately after the entry of Shri Rahul Gandhi into politics and particularly after January 2013, when he was appointed as the Vice President by you, the entire consultative mechanism that existed earlier was demolished by him”, wrote Azad to Sonia Gandhi.

The Rajya Sabha MP further added that “Before Bharat Jodo, you should have done Congress Jodo exercise across the country”.

Lastly, he said, “Therefore it is with great regret and an extremely leaden heart that I have decided to sever my half a century old association with the Indian National Congress and hereby resign from all my positions including the primary membership of Congress”.

Azad’s resignation comes as yet another jolt to Congress with several leaders quitting the party in the past few months.
