New Dlehi, 21st July 2023: Through a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on Thursday, it has been announced that the government has restricted the export of non-basmati white rice.
The DGFT said in the notification, “Export policy of non-basmati white rice (semi-milled or wholly milled rice, whether or not polished or glazed)…is amended from free to prohibited.”
It did, however, state that consignments of this rice will be permitted to be transported under specific situations, such as when loading of this rice on the ship that began prior to this notification.
The notification further added that export will also be permitted if the government grants authorisation to other countries to meet their food security needs and if their governments request it.
The afflicted category, non-basmati white and broken rice, accounted for around 10 million tonnes of India’s overall rice exports of 22 million tonnes last year.
The government further clarified late Thursday that the prohibition did not apply to parboiled rice, which accounted for 7.4 million tonnes of exports in 2022.
The move indicates Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government’s attention to food inflation ahead of a general election next year.
India accounts for more than 40% of global rice exports, and low stockpiles among other exporters imply that any reduction in shipments might raise food prices, which have already been pushed up by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year and erratic weather conditions.
The move has triggered risk of inflation in food prices across the globe.
