New Delhi (India), 28th March 2023: According to officials, the government is considering to add another two to three months to the limit for linking the permanent account number (PAN) to Aadhaar.

According to a government official with knowledge of the development, the Central Board of Direct Taxes may soon issue a notification to officially announcing the postponement.

However, there will be a charge for the time period. The final day for PAN-Aadhaar linking is currently March 31, 2023.

The CBDT had set a charge of Rs. 500 for up to three months starting on April 1, 2022, and Rs. 1000 after that, while delaying the deadline on March 30, 2022, by one year. The date has already been postponed four times by the government.

The PAN of people who do not link it with their Aadhaar will become inoperative after March 31, 2023, and all penalties under the Income Tax Act for failing to provide, notify, or quote the PAN will apply to such taxpayers. Quoting Aadhaar is mandatory for filing income tax returns (ITRs) as well as for obtaining a new PAN.
