Govt should not play politics on UPSC
The BJP’s central government should not play politics on the issue of civil services preliminary examination and should immediately advise the UPSC to postpone this exam instead of putting off a decision till the last moment.
The ministers of the Narendra Modi government have been giving casual statements and it appears they have still not understood the seriousness of the situation, which is clear from the fact that the government has so far failed to persuade the students to call off their agitation.
There is near unanimity in the country that given the prevailing situation, the best way out for the Union Public Service Commission is to postpone the prelim exams scheduled to begin from August 24. Also how the UPSC had started issuing the online admit cards last week, needs to be probed since this was the root cause of the students’ unrest, who had accepted the government and the UPSC assurance, only to be betrayed later.
It is the government’s duty to send an informal advisory to the UPSC on this issue, and then as a next step, the grievance of the aspirants on the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), should be taken up.
There is more than sufficient evidence to prove that the then Congress-led UPA government had virtually forced the UPSC to introduce CSAT in the civil services prelim examination in 2011.
It is strange that Congress leaders, including its vice-president Rahul Gandhi, whose government was actually responsible for CSAT are now shedding crocodile tears on the issue and it is amusing that now they are saying they agree with the students demands !
Now, when the matter has reached a flash point, the Congress is trying to make political capital through its one of the most amazing U turns. The need of the hour is to assure the protesting students that none of their rights will be harmed.
