Gandhinagar (30/10/2022): On Saturday, the Gujarat government announced its decision to form a committee for implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

In a state cabinet meeting held in Gandhinagar, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was authorized to appoint the committee that will be headed by a retired judge of Gujarat High Court and will have 3-4 members. Union Minister Parshottam Rupala further shared that the panel will come into being before the poll code takes effect.

Dismissing the criticism from BJP’s opposition, Rupala noted that the announcement had nothing to do with the upcoming polls.

He also stated: “We do not intend to override people’s fundamental rights. UCC is about resolving discrepancies arising in civil disputes, such as a wife’s or daughter’s claim on the husband’s or father’s property. We had received many representations from people about such issues”.
