Gurgaon battles slow traffic; police chief on patrol
Gurgaon, Aug 29 (IANS) Gurgaon battled slow traffic movement for hours after heavy rain on Monday afternoon brought the millennium city to a standstill again, even as city police chief Sandeep Khirwar supervised the traffic management on the streets.
Traffic was moving at snail’s pace at the Hero Honda Chowk despite over two dozen police personnel including the chief of Sadar Police Station trying their best to clear the jam.
Policemen were also seen pushing the broken-down vehicles in 2 to 3 feet water.
On the road from Jaipur to Delhi, the waterlogging led to a 20 km long traffic jam from the Hero Honda Chowk to Manesar.
The authorities installed generators to pump out the water but it hardly improved the situation but police claimed otherwise.
“Traffic is fast normalising. Police and civilian officers are on the roads. There is no jam as such. Slow vehicular movement but situation is improving,” Khirwar told IANS.
A commuter, who was headed to Jaipur, said that his vehicle has been stuck at the Hero Honda chowk since 6 p.m.
Amit Yadav, who left his office around 4.30 p.m. to reach his house in village Balewa near Rewari, some 46 km from Gurgaon city, told IANS: “It took more than 4 hours to cover a distance of 25 km.”
A similar situation was witnessed on August 28 after an hour-long spell of heavy rain.
The administration had assured to counter similar situation after the Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar conducted an aerial survey of the millennium city.
Experts said that the situation like today will be repeated again and again if a full proof plan to tackle storm water is not prepared and implemented honestly.
