#Gurgaon SHO arrested for corruption, released for lack of evidence
GURGAON: Two Gurgaon cops were penalized in quick succession on Saturday. The Sohna police station station house officer (SHO), inspector Sunil Kumar, was arrested and produced in court on Sunday for misconduct. He was accused of accepting bribe and extorting money from owners of dumper trucks plying in the area, and arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was later released by the court due to lack of evidence.
The problem, said a source, began on Friday, when, after a local businessman was shot dead, Sohna residents organized a protest, threatening to continue with their blockade on the arterial Sohna Road if the local SHO was not replaced. They blamed him for having failed to control crime in the area. Under public pressure, police decided to reappoint the SHO to Police Lines on Saturday.
The next day, though, cyber crime cell intercepted a call in which two unknown persons were heard planning to bribe SHO Sunil Kumar. Sources revealed the conversation was between two dumper-truck owners, who were recorded discussing paying the Sohna SHO a monthly bribe.
The police commissioner soon ordered the ACP Sohna to file a case against the SHO and take necessary action. Kumar was arrested later on Saturday and produced in court on Sunday. Eyewitnesses revealed the inspector arrived in a sedan at court. “The SHO has been shifted to a new duty. Further action will be taken if needed, based on new evidence,” said ACP (crime) Rajesh Kumar.
Earlier on Saturday, inspector Naveen Kumar, the erstwhile SHO of DLF II, was suspended after vehicle thefts and other crimes were reported to have risen alarmingly under his jurisdiction.
