Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to Honor Dr. Rakesh Kumar with ‘Prerna Strot Samman 2024’ on Independence Day

New Delhi, 10th August, 2024: Dr. Rakesh Kumar, the Chairman of India Expo Mart Limited and Chief Mentor of the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), will be honored with the ‘Prerna Strot Samman 2024’ on August 15, 2024. The prestigious award will be presented by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu during a state-level Independence Day event in Dehra, Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh.
In addition to Dr. Rakesh Kumar, this award will also be given to two other distinguished personalities from Himachal Pradesh: Padma Shri awardee Prof. Dr. Mahesh Sharma and Satyaprakash Sharma, founder of Divya Manav Jyoti Seva Trust.
Outstanding Service to Himachal Pradesh
Dr. Rakesh Kumar is being recognized with the ‘Prerna Strot Samman 2024,’ the highest civilian honor of Himachal Pradesh, for his remarkable contributions to handicrafts, trade, and export promotion on a global scale. His efforts have been instrumental in advancing skill development, health, sports, arts, crafts, and cultural promotion in Himachal Pradesh. Dr. Kumar has played a key role in bringing the culture, arts, literature, crafts, and tourism of Himachal Pradesh to an international audience.
He has consistently showcased Himachali culture and heritage at fairs organized at the India Expo Mart, making a significant contribution to spreading the unique and pleasant fragrance of Himachal Pradesh worldwide.
The “Handicrafts Man of India”
Dr. Rakesh Kumar is widely known as the “Handicrafts Man of India.” His contributions to establishing Indian handicrafts, arts, culture, and local products on the global stage are widely acknowledged, with praise coming from prominent figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and others.
Dr. Kumar’s efforts have led to the growth and promotion of Indian handicrafts worldwide. His journey began in Delhi, although he originally hails from the Khadul village in Palampur tehsil, Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. He completed his education in Delhi, earning a postgraduate degree in Public Administration and International Trade.
Journey and Achievements:
Dr. Rakesh Kumar’s journey as an international entrepreneur and leader in the Indian handicrafts sector is marked by his relentless efforts, knowledge, skill, dedication, and strong imagination. He organized his first major show, the “Indian Handicrafts and Gift Fair (IIGF),” in 1994. What began as a dream has now become a significant platform for Indian handicraft exporters and artisans, attracting major business figures from developed countries worldwide.
He has also played a crucial role in the development of various handicraft hubs across India, including Jodhpur, Jaipur, Saharanpur, Narsapur, Moradabad, and others. Notably, his efforts in empowering nearly 11,000 women artisans in Barmer, Rajasthan, and Manna village are widely recognized.
Recognition and Honors:
Dr. Rakesh Kumar has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including:
– Honorary Doctorate from Tirthankar Mahaveer University, presented by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.D.Litt. degree from the International Tamil University, USA.
– JETRO Commendation Award from the Japanese government, being the first Indian to receive this honor.
– “Best Professional in MICE” award from Safari India South Asia Travel Awards for his role in establishing and running the India Exposition Mart Limited in Greater Noida.
– “Iron Man of the Exhibition Industry” award at the Exhibition Excellence Awards in 2016.
– “Best MICE Person of the Year” at the 14th Annual International Hospitality and Travel Awards, 2018.
– Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the handicrafts sector, presented at the Handicrafts Summit organized by the Handicrafts Exporters Association.
