National News (18/10/2026): Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani’s daughter, Isha Ambani, has recalled how an everyday internet connectivity problem in India sparked a conversation within the Ambani family and eventually contributed to the idea behind Reliance Jio. Reflecting on the company’s early inspiration, she highlighted how a personal experience exposed the digital divide between India and Western countries and prompted a discussion about making internet access more widely available.
Speaking at Jio Platforms’ IPO press conference in Mumbai on October 15, Isha recounted an incident from 2009–10, when she returned to India from the United States with her brother, Akash Ambani, during a college break. At the time, she was attempting to submit a college assignment but was unable to do so because her internet connection was not working.
The seemingly routine problem led her to question why India did not offer the same level of reliable digital connectivity that she had experienced in Western countries. What began as a personal inconvenience soon developed into a broader discussion between the siblings about the challenges facing India’s digital infrastructure and the need to bridge the connectivity gap.
According to Isha, Akash proposed the idea of building a digital technology platform company that could help address these challenges. The conversation reflected a larger ambition to make digital services more accessible and create opportunities for people across the country through improved connectivity.
Reliance Jio’s Journey Towards Expanding Digital Connectivity
Reliance Jio was launched in 2016, marking a significant step in Reliance’s efforts to expand mobile internet access across India. The company entered the telecommunications market with a focus on making digital connectivity more accessible and enabling a wider population to benefit from internet-based services.
Over time, affordable data services and wider network access became central to Jio’s approach, helping bring millions of users into the digital ecosystem. The company’s growth also reflected the broader transformation of India’s telecommunications sector, where mobile internet became an increasingly important part of everyday life, education, business and communication.
Isha’s recollection underscored how the idea behind a major business initiative can emerge from a simple, real-life experience. It also highlighted the role of long-term thinking in identifying a widespread problem and exploring solutions capable of operating at a national scale.
Isha Ambani Highlights Three Key Principles of Reliance’s Business Strategy
During the press conference, Isha outlined three key principles that have shaped Reliance’s business approach: maintaining a long-term perspective, achieving scale large enough to transform an industry’s economics, and ensuring effective execution of business plans.
She emphasised the importance of looking beyond immediate gains and building businesses with the potential to create lasting impact. According to this approach, scale is not merely about expansion; it can also help reshape costs, improve accessibility and change how an industry operates.
Isha also recalled Reliance’s commitment to becoming debt-free, a target the company achieved ahead of schedule in 2020. The milestone, she indicated, reflected the importance of financial discipline and focused execution in delivering major business objectives.
Carrying Forward Dhirubhai Ambani’s Vision
Reflecting on Reliance’s legacy, Isha spoke about her grandfather, Dhirubhai Ambani, who took the company public in 1977. She recalled his vision of enabling ordinary Indians to participate in the country’s economic growth and share in its prosperity.
That vision, she suggested, continues to influence the company’s approach as it expands into new areas and builds businesses designed to serve a broad population. The guiding philosophy, “Growth is life,” remains central to Reliance’s identity and its long-term ambitions.
Isha said that she and her brothers, Akash and Anant Ambani, are carrying forward their grandfather’s legacy. Her remarks connected Reliance’s early entrepreneurial journey with its continuing focus on technology, scale and expanding opportunities for people across India.
The story of Jio’s inspiration, as recalled by Isha, highlights how a problem encountered by two siblings became the starting point for a wider conversation about digital access—one that ultimately aligned with Reliance’s ambition to transform connectivity in India.
