IAMAI To Represent Intermediaries For Changes In Representation of People Act. @IAMAIForum

New Delhi, January 14, 2019: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has thought it fit to reach out to all intermediaries including social media platforms for its proposed revision of the Provisions of Section 126 of the Representation of People Act, 1951, through the Internet and Mobile Association of India [IAMAI].

IAMAI welcomes the Report of the Committee to Review the Provisions of Section 126 of the Representation of People Act, 1951, constituted by the ECI. We would also like to thank ECI for its leadership and for adopting a consultative approach in development of the Report. The membership of IAMAI recognizes that this is an important issue and acknowledges that no online platform should be abused to undermine the integrity and sanctity of democratic processes.

Relevant online platforms are committed to promptly responding to such abuse, in accordance with law, when notified by the ECI, if it is found to be in violation of Section 126 of the Representation of People Act, 1951. IAMAI being the voice for majority of intermediaries in India would like to reaffirm its commitment to working with the ECI to ensure free and fair elections in the country. We look forward to closely engaging with the Election Commission of India to build voter awareness and enhance civic engagement.

Speaking about the proposed changes, Dr Subho Ray, President, IAMAI, lauded the ECI for the widest consultation possible with various intermediaries, including social media platforms and reiterated that all members are committed towards fair and transparent conduct of elections.
