Imphal, 20/06/2023: With the internet ban in Manipur still in effect after more than a month and a half due to the state’s ethnic violence, the Manipur High Court has now asked Internet Service Providers if it is possible to restore internet connectivity while restricting access to social media platforms.

The High Court ordered the service providers — Vodafone, Airtel, Jio, BSNL, and Idea — to file brief affidavits justifying the feasibility of such a move “while safeguarding the State Government’s concern to maintain law and order in the State.” The court reviewed a slew of Public Interest Litigation applications that sought to restore internet connection, noting the issues the ban had caused citizens.

While hearing these instances last week, a Bench of Justices Ahanthem Bimol Singh and A. Guneshwar Sharma also directed that citizens have limited internet access in specifically defined areas that are now under the control of the state authorities. The move addresses explicitly the hardship faced by the students in the state during the ongoing admissions process in most educational institutions nationwide.
