New Delhi (05 November, 2024): On the 4th of November 2024, IILM University hosted a special lecture to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of its esteemed founder Dr. Kulwant Rai. The lecture, held at the IILM campus in Lodhi Institutional Area, New Delhi, was delivered on the Topic “India’s Economy: Opportunities and Challenges” by Anand Sharma, former Union Minister of Commerce and Industry.
The event brought together a distinguished audience, including diplomats, policymakers, educators and members of the Rai family, who gathered to honor Dr. Kulwant Rai’s contributions in the field of industry and education.
The event began with Anand Sharma paying tribute to Dr. Kulwant Rai, acknowledging his pioneering role in shaping the Indian industrial and education landscape. Sharma emphasized the lasting legacy of Dr. Rai, who not only contributed to the realm of education but also had a deep connection to diverse fields, including arts and culture. He noted that the values and principles Dr. Rai instilled in his work continued to guide his family, community and the institutions he built up.
Sharma talked about India’s journey post-independence, highlighting the nation’s significant progress over the decades. He emphasized the importance of staying connected to India’s foundational values while adapting to global advancements. Reflecting on his own experiences, Sharma pointed out that many of the developments that are now integral to daily life, such as the launch of India’s first satellite in 1975, were once dreams that seemed distant.
The former minister also shared insights into India’s economic opportunities and challenges. He focused on the nation’s potential to become a developed economy by 204, marking India’s centenary of independence. Sharma stressed that to achieve this, India would need an uninterrupted annual growth rate of 10%, enabling the country to reach a 30 trillion-dollar economy.
However, Sharma also pointed out significant challenges, particularly in the areas of job creation and education. He noted that addressing these issues should be a top priority for policymakers, as the country works toward its ambitious growth targets. He also advocated for the expansion of India’s manufacturing sector, emphasizing the importance of the MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) sector in strengthening the economy.
In his remarks, Sharma further elaborated on the concept of international trade, underscoring that India must focus on creating products that are in demand globally, while also recognizing the need to import goods that cannot be produced domestically. This mutual exchange would help bolster India’s position in the global marketplace, he suggested.
The session concluded with Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director General of IILM Lodhi Road, thanking the attendees for their participation and noting the value of Sharma’s insights into the Indian economy. Dr. Chaturvedi also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to honor Dr. Kulwant Rai’s legacy and shared how discussions like these play a crucial role in shaping the nation’s future.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Dr. S.Y. Siddiqui, Chairman Emeritus of IILM Group, Ms Malvika Rai, Chairman of IILM Lodhi Road, Anil Rai, Chairman of IILM Group, and various diplomats, officials, and leaders in education and policy.
This event was a fitting tribute to Dr. Kulwant Rai, whose vision and dedication continue to inspire future generations of leaders and thinkers in India.
