New Delhi, Nov 15, 2022: A report released by the US government has shown that the number of Indian students studying in America rose by 19% in 2021-22. This is a a marked improvement from previous figures which indicated a 13% drop in Indian students studying in the US during 2020-21.

The figures have been unveiled by an Open Doors Report, an annual survey on international students which is released by the Institute of International Education.

India also eclipsed China to become the top recipient of US student visas this year, notified Don Heflin, who serves as Minister Counselor for Consular Affairs at the US Embassy in New Delhi.

Heflin shared that the US issued a record 82,000 visas to Indian students in the months of June, July and August this year. This trumped a previous record of 62,000 visas which was issued during the same period last year.

China fell behind India due to its strict COVID-19-related restrictions. Heflin stated that quarantine norms and travel bans had made it harder for Chinese students to get their hands on visas.

In a normal year, around 110,000- 120,000 visas are issued to students from China but that number fell to around 50,000 this time around.
