India reacts on Taiwan crisis, urges both nations to maintain peace, excercise restraint

Delhi, August,12th 2022: In a first reaction to the ongoing crisis between Taiwan and China, India urged both it’s Asian neighbours to exercise restraint and make efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.

China launched major military drills around Taiwan after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, syreny her administrations support to the country.

Chinese air and naval vessels have been seen in the surrounding regions of Taiwan and the firing of ballistic missiles was also reported.
“China has openly declared its leadership over the Taiwan Strait. This is a gross violation of Taiwan’s rights under international law.”, said Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.

“Like many other countries, India too is concerned about the recent developments and increasing tensions.”, said Minister of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi during a media briefing on August 12th.

“We urge the exercise of restraint, avoidance of unilateral actions to change status quo, de-escalation of tensions, and efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region,” he said.

Chinese military actions have began after Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan and in response, Taiwan has also been holding drills to fend them off.
“We will resolutely defend our independence and democracy”, said Joseph Wu.
