India’s Exemplary Commitment to Global South Issues: S. Jaishankar Highlights Achievements at B20 Summit

New Delhi, August 27, 2023: During his address at the B20 summit in New Delhi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted India’s significant contributions on the global stage, citing the country’s proactive role in addressing issues of the Global South.

He emphasized that India’s current trajectory showcases a blend of experimentation, scaling up, deployment, innovation, and breakthroughs that have reverberations across the world.

Jaishankar commended India’s response during the Covid-19 pandemic, where the nation emerged as the ‘Pharmacy of the World,’ exporting ‘Made in India’ vaccines to more than 100 countries. He also underscored India’s swift aid in times of turmoil, notably in Myanmar and Turkey.

He stated, “Today’s India is the one, where the world simultaneously witnesses experimentation, scaling up, deployment, innovation, and breakthroughs… They provide replicable models for the rest of the Global South.”

The minister elaborated on India’s endeavors to bolster the Global South’s cause, stating, “During the Covid (pandemic), Made-in-India vaccines were sent to about 100 countries. And about 150 nations imported medicines during this period from the ‘Pharmacy of the World’.”

India’s developmental collaborations have expanded to 78 nations, with over 600 projects in progress or delivered, a testament to New Delhi’s capabilities and goodwill. Highlighting the ‘Kampala’ principle, Jaishankar affirmed India’s approach guided by the priorities of its partners.

Furthermore, he acknowledged India’s role as a first responder during international crises, demonstrating its humanitarian commitment. As he concluded, he emphasized the paradigm shift towards “Emerging World 2.0,” marked by equitable growth, sustainable development, and climate action.

The B20 summit, a G20 dialogue forum with global business leaders, this year revolves around the theme ‘R.A.I.S.E – Responsible, Accelerated, Innovative, Sustainable, and Equitable Businesses.’ With over 1,500 delegates from 55 countries participating, the event underscores India’s active engagement in shaping a more inclusive and progressive global landscape.
