India’s first voter passes away after casting his last vote two days back

Himachal Pradesh, Nov 5, 2022: On Saturday, India’s first voter Shyam Saran Negi passed away at his residence in Himachal Pradesh. He was 106.

Chief Minister Chief Minister Jairam Thakur took to Twitter to relay his condolences. “Saddened to hear about the demise of Shyam Saran Negi Ji, the first voter of independent India who hailed from Kinnaur,” he tweeted in Hindi.

On November 2nd, Shyam Negi had cast his last vote in the Himachal Pradesh elections. Later, he was felicitated by Abid Hussain Sadiq, Deputy Commissioner of Kinnaur.

An Election Commission spokesperson stated: “ECI mourns the demise of Shri Shyam Saran Negi. We are eternally grateful for his service to the nation”.

“He inspired millions to vote, even before his demise, he voted for Himachal Pradesh Assembly Elections 2022 through postal ballot on November 2, 2022,” the EC shared on Twitter.
