Bengaluru(India), 11/08/23: During the convocation of Techno India University in Kolkata, Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy lectured on how democracy may work better. According to the business tycoon, democracy works best in a pluralistic society in which each individual is allowed to practise his or her own views and faith without pushing it on others.
According to him, democracy will thrive only if a mindset is developed that emphasises the similarities rather than the distinctions between various viewpoints.
Narayana Murthy stated about democracy, quoting former US President Franklin D Roosevelt, that, “true democracy has four freedoms-freedom of expression, freedom of faith, freedom from fear and freedom from want.”
Murthy, now the chairman emeritus of Infosys, stated that in a democracy, people have the freedom to express themselves responsibly, courteously, and courageously, as well as the freedom to pursue a higher quality of life.
He also said, “This translates to the responsibility to create a just society, which embraces the fundamental principle to provide the strongest set of civil liberties and personal rights to everyone, and to tolerate new economic inequalities only if such inequalities ameliorate the conditions of the poor citizens.”
Murthy also shared his views on India’s population and said, “India has not put population control on the front burner. The most urgent need at the moment is to reduce our population growth rate. While certain parts of India have made decent progress in reducing it, certain other parts have not paid sufficient attention to this important issue.”
