Kolkata, August 26, 2023: Jadavpur University has commenced the implementation of a comprehensive CCTV camera system across its campus, announced interim vice-chancellor Buddhadeb Sau on Saturday. The move comes in response to growing concerns about campus security and safety.

Sau shared that the installation of CCTV cameras had begun, with a focus on strategic locations, including entry gates. He stated, “The process of installation of CCTV cameras started from today. The cameras will be installed at all the important points including the main entry gates.”

In a notable development, a team from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is expected to visit the university to further address security aspects, particularly regarding human surveillance.

Parallelly, the university’s registrar has submitted a report to the Jadavpur police station concerning an incident involving an alleged human rights activist group dressed in army attire on the campus last Thursday.

Jadavpur University has recently faced heightened scrutiny after the tragic demise of a 17-year-old undergraduate student from the Bengali department. The student had fallen from a second-floor balcony of the main boys’ hostel on August 9 and passed away a day later. His family has raised allegations of ragging and sexual abuse, sparking nationwide conversations on campus safety and anti-ragging measures.

The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights has also expressed concerns about the lack of CCTV cameras within the campus. The commission has criticized the university authorities for not implementing essential security measures to ensure the well-being of students.

The installation of CCTV cameras is expected to enhance transparency, surveillance, and safety across Jadavpur University’s campus, promoting a secure environment for all its members.
