Jat quota stir: Buses to be back and smooth on NH-1 from tomorrow

Haryana Roadways buses via the Chandigarh-Delhi National Highway-1, or GT Road, will resume on Wednesday, officials said here. As for the luxury Volvo buses, those would resume from 5pm on Wednesday, for which online bookings would also be available from the morning. This comes nearly a week after buses were gradually stopped on the highway that was blockaded by protesters during the Jat community’s agitation for seeking job reservations.

Meanwhile, another special train from Chandigarh departed for Delhi’s Anand Vihar station at 11am on Tuesday, carrying over 1,200 passengers. But the other trains remain cancelled for the fifth consecutive day, and bus services too continued to be disrupted till the filing of this report late afternoon.

No direct bus was available for Delhi on Tuesday. This happened despite reports that the NH-1 was now open. In all, 150 Haryana Roadways buses did depart from Chandigarh but mostly for Ambala, 15 up to Karnal and six for Panipat. Only one Punjab Roadways bus left for Meerut, which is the alternative route to the national capital.

The train was scheduled to reach Delhi after six hours, via Ambala, Saharanpur, Meerut and Ghaziabad, and then make the journey back starting 10.30pm. A special train had departed for the Anand Vihar station via this western Uttar Pradesh route at 4.30pm on Monday too.
