New Delhi, Nov 9, 2022: On Wednesday Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India.
The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Elevated to the position of a Supreme Court Judge on May 13, 2016, Justice Chandrachud has been a part of several constitution benches and landmark judgements, including the Ayodhya land dispute and right to privacy.
He was also part of the benches which delivered key judgements on decriminalization of same sex relations by partially striking down Section 377 of the IPC, the validity of the Aadhar Scheme, and the Sabarimala issue.
Justice Chandrachud is the son of late Justice YV Chandrachud, the longest serving CJI who had held the top post for seven years.
In his first statement to the media following the swearing-in ceremony, Justice Chandrachud said, “Serving the ordinary citizen is my priority.”
He has also hinted at his desire to ensure reforms in registry and judicial processes.
