Karnataka (15/06/2023): The Congress government, led by Siddaramaiah, has repealed the previous BJP government’s rule prohibiting religious conversion in the state. The state cabinet approved the plan today, announced HK Patil, the state’s Law & Parliamentary Affairs minister.

The law that prohibited religious conversion through compulsion, misrepresentation, or allurement, which numerous BJP-ruled states have enacted, was established in the state in May last year through an Ordinance. In September, a bill to replace it was submitted to the state assembly.

Patil further announced a slew of measures that the state cabinet implemented today, all of which looks to undo several schemes that the previous administration ran. He stated that the Cabinet has agreed to delete the chapters on KB Hedgewar from school history books, who was one of the founders of the BJP’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh after it was included in all textbooks in the previous year.

The BJP government’s revisions to the school curriculum have also been reversed. Patil told reporters following the meeting that the Cabinet has decided to make reading the Preamble to the Constitution and the hymn mandatory in schools and institutions. The Cabinet had also resolved to enact a new agricultural markets law (APMC) to replace the one passed when the BJP was in office.
