NEW DELHI, July 14, 2022—Former Delhi Power Minister Shri HaroonYusuf said that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who sprang on Delhi like a ‘Messiah’, promising  “power subsidy and zero bills”,  and who had also vowed to audit the accounts  of the DISCOMS (Power Distribution Companies)  by CAG, was now trying to snap the power lines of the poor people in collusion with the power distribution companies by hiking various surcharges, which will sharply increase the electricity bills of the people from July. He said that from October, power consumers will have to give it in writing whether they want to avail of power subsidy, which was a betrayal on the people of Delhi.

Addressing a joint press conference along with Shri Anil Bhardwaj, ex-MLA and Chairman of the DPCC Communications Department, at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan here today, Shri Haroon Yusuf said that due to Kejriwal’s wrong policies and BJP’s step-motherly treatment, the people of Delhi have been pushed into darkness, as the 500 megawatt power out of 728 megawatt received from the Dadri-II power plant, which the Delhi Government had surrendered, was allotted to Haryana by the BJP Government, but ironically, Delhi was now buying 500 megawatt power from BJP’s  blue-eyed boy, Adani’s power company, at a higher rate. He said that an agreement with NTPC’s Dadri-II Power plant was signed by the Congress Government on March 8, 2011 to supply power to the Capital till 2035, but Kejriwal’s former Power Minister Satyender Jain (who is now in jail for a money laundering case), who wrote letters to the Union Power Ministry on July 6, 2015 and January 22, 2016 to surrender the 500  megawatt  power, was now hurting the interest of Delhi. Vice-chairman of the DPCC Communications Department Shri Anuj Attrey was also present at the press conference.

Shri HaroonYusuf asked why Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was silent on this matter, and why hasn’t he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Power Minister to find a solution to the matter?

Shri  Haroon Yusuf said  that a decision on a forensic audit of the DISCOMS has been reserved in the Supreme Court for the past four years, but the Aam Aadmi Party Government has taken no step to get a final verdict on the issue, so that people will get a clear picture of the loot of public money by the power distribution companies.

Shri HaroonYusuf said that when Congress was in power, it asked the power companies to foot the pension trust money, and the Congress Government received Rs 400 crore from the power distribution companies on this account. He said that now the power companies were not only charging Pension Trust surcharge, but also fixed charge, electricity tax, PPAC and RA surcharge. He said that the power companies have already collected Rs 37,227 crore from the people in various surcharges, and the Kejriwal Government  has directly given power subsidy to the tune of Rs 11,743 crore to the power companies, instead of transferring  the subsidy amount into the accounts of the  consumers, and this deal reeks of corruption. He said that to add to the burden of the people, with a hike in the power purchase agreement cost (PPAC), the various surcharges have risen from 16.18 per cent in June to 22 per cent from July..

Former Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister Shri Anil Bhardwaj said that Delhi Congress workers, under the leadership of DPCC president Ch. Anil Kumar, will gherao the residence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal  at Civil Lines tomorrow (Friday) to protest against the 2 to 6 per cent hike in the Power Purchase Agreement Cost (PPAC) by the power companies. He said that Congress will mount agitations if the PPAC rate hike was not rolled back forthwith.
