New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju on Sunday invited Supreme court lawyer Manoj Gorkela to felicitate him for his continued engagement and representation for Buddhist community.

Gorkela has filed a petition in Supreme court of India on behalf of the Buddhist Society. The petition demands adoption of Buddhism in Indian philosophy, values and beliefs.

“As it is known to all that Lord Buddha was born in ancient India, nevertheless, it also remains the fact that Lord Buddha (Buddhism) was never regarded/recognized/adopted by any of the governments post our independence, till date, as Indian virtue/philosophy/belief,” the petition reads.

The petition also seeks for the governing body of Buddhists Society in Bhodgaya, Bihar to have all Buddhist Members.

“In Bihar state, earlier, district collector would be the chairman of the governing body of Buddhist society who would himself be a follower of Hinduism. The law has now been amended and at present this position remains open for the Collector of the District, de-facto, irrespective of his religion and the community,” Gorkela said while talking to Ten News.

“However, there remains a big problem with the governing body of Buddhist society in Bodhgaya, Bihar where out of eight members only few members are monk and the rest are non-monks (Non-Buddhist) and all the 56 Buddhist countries at present desire and demand to have the change in the law of the body by way of declaration/change in regulation that all the members of this society shall be Buddhist,” the petition demands.

Advocate Gorkela also presented a copy of the petition to Kiren Rijiju. The petition has been admitted to the the Supreme court of India and is scheduled for hearing.
