Establishing a new milestone in the evolution of smartphones, LG Electronics today officially launched its flagship curved smartphone LG G Flex in India. LG G Flex, the latest device in LG’s premium G Series, is the first smartphone that is designed to fit the palm of the hand and follow the contour of the face. It incorporates proprietary innovations from other LG companies in the form of never-seen-before display and battery, and also boasts of a new User Experience (UX) that takes advantage of its curved form factor.

According to Mr. Soon Kwon, M.D., LG India, “Curved flexible displays are a groundbreaking technology that enhances consumers’ viewing experience by many degrees. LG’s latest offering G Flex combines innovation and technology along with sleek, curved design that not only delivers a more comfortable grip and fit, but offers better voice and sound quality. G Flex represents a new era in the smartphone space where curved and flexible displays are no longer a sci-fi fantasy.”

Ergonomics and Curvy Delights

The vertically curved design of the LG GFLEX, in landscape mode, offers a true immersive cinematic viewing pleasure. It bestows the most comfortable viewing angle for watching videos or playing games. After analyzing the findings of exhaustive studies, LG designed the G Flex to curve from top to bottom, which facilitates a comfortable grip, better comfort and excellent call & sound volume quality. The vertical curve creates an environment where users can easily be immersed when viewing videos or playing games in landscape mode.

The vertically curved design of the LG G Flex reduces the distance between one’s mouth to the microphone when the device is held against the ear, as traditional telephone handsets used to. The LG G Flex employs a curvature arc that is optimized for the average face, to deliver improved voice and sound quality. The curved form increases the sound level by 3dB compared to typical flat smartphones. The curved design also offers a more reassuring grip and fits more comfortably in one’s back pocket.

LG G Flex also features the Rear Key that was first introduced in the LG G2. Devoid of any buttons on the sides, there is less chance of accidentally powering off the phone and the convenience of using one’s index finger to adjust the volume when talking over the phone. The Rear Key gives intuitive user experience where users can operate the power button and volume rocker using their index finger, without the need to actually see them while holding the device in one hand.

Hardware for Optimized Performance

The LG G Flex sports a 6 inch OLED screen that gives the G Flex its unique curved shape, and vivid display. Its prominent curve makes watching videos a visual treat and gives an immersive IMAX- like viewing experience in the landscape mode. Its mammoth 3,500mAh battery ensures a long battery life, and powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset offers the fastest and best performance for multi-tasking. The G Flex sports a 13MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera.

Innovation Delivered Through Collaboration

The development of LG G Flex was only possible through the successful collaboration with sister companies LG Display and LG Chem. The 6-inch display found in the G Flex is the world’s largest Plastic OLED (POLED) display developed and mass produced specifically for smartphones. The ultra-thin, ultra-light flexible POLED display and curved OLED panel are built on plastic substrates instead of glass, giving LG G Flex its unique shape and durability. The POLED display is brighter and more precise thanks to the application of Real RGB, which contains all three sub-pixels — red, green and blue — in one pixel.

Consumer-centric UX

Among the several new technologies, the LG G Flex is the first smartphone to apply a “Self-Healing” coating on the back cover. The elastic coating has the ability to recover from the daily wear-and-tear scratches and nicks that un-cased smartphones are likely to receive, keeping the G Flex looking newer for a longer time. The updated UX also comes with a number of new features like QTheater, which gives users quick access to photos, videos and YouTube right from the lock screen, and Dual Window which divides the wide 6-inch screen into two separate windows for more effective multitasking. The Face Detection Indicator displays the LED on the Rear Key in green to confirm status of face detection and focus and the Camera Timer flashes the Rear Key LED to indicate that the countdown has begun.

The LG Flex will be available in India starting February 2014 and is priced at MRPRs. 69,999/-
